1. Keep people away from electrical hazards
Do not step into standing water near outlets, appliances, wiring or an electrical panel. If the area is unsafe, leave it and call for appropriate emergency help.
2. Stop the water if you can do it safely
A sink or toilet may have a local shutoff valve. For a supply pipe leak, the main water shutoff may be needed. Do not force a stuck valve or enter an unsafe area to reach one.
3. Limit damage and document it
Move belongings out of the affected area, use towels or a container if useful, and take photos. Note when you first noticed the leak and which fixtures were in use.
4. Describe the location and urgency
Is the water dripping or flowing? Is it clean water or a drain backup? Is it under a sink, inside a wall, around the water heater or coming through the ceiling? These details help prioritize the response.
